How to Choose a Yoga Alliance Accredited Teacher Training in the UK

A practical checklist for comparing UK yoga teacher trainings: accreditation, class size, faculty, format, and what's actually included in the price.

With HUNDREDS of accredited yoga teacher trainings across the UK, the marketing tends to look similar: award-winning faculty, life-changing experience, book now.

Here's a practical checklist for cutting through that and comparing schools on what actually matters 👇🏽.

The short answer

Check five things before you pay a deposit:

🟠 Accreditation body and level

🟤 Class size and faculty ratio

🟠 Format (in-person, online, or hybrid)

🟤 Exactly what's included in the price

🟠 What support exists after you graduate

A school that's transparent and strong on all five is a safe choice regardless of brand size.

1. Accreditation body and level

Confirm the school is registered with a recognised accrediting body — Yoga Alliance (US) or Yoga Alliance Professionals (UK) are the two most widely recognised — and check the level (200-hour foundational, 300-hour advanced). A school's accreditation status is usually verifiable directly on the accrediting body's own directory, not just claimed on the school's website.

2. Class size and faculty ratio

A 12-person cohort with three faculty members gets meaningfully more individual correction and mentorship than a 40-person training with one instructor. Ask directly how many students are in the next intake and how many teachers are actually in the room.

3. Format and total duration

In-person, online, and hybrid trainings all produce valid certifications, but they suit different people (see our comparison of in-person vs online teacher training). Duration matters too — a training spread over 10 months with monthly weekends gives you time to actually absorb and practise the material between sessions, compared with an intensive one-month immersion.

4. What's actually included

  • Manuals and course materials — are they included or a separate purchase?

  • Studio or class access during the training.

  • Any bonus courses, community access, or ongoing resources.

  • Clarity on total cost — deposit plus balance, and whether payment plans exist.

5. What happens after you graduate

The best indicator of a school's confidence in its own teaching is what it offers if you finish the course and still don't feel ready to teach. Some schools simply hand you a certificate and move on. Others build in ongoing mentorship — Akram Yoga's 200-Hour Teacher Training, for example, includes a Teach-Ready Guarantee: complete the attendance and coursework requirements, and if you still don't feel ready, you're mentored one-to-one until you do, free of charge.

FAQ

Q: What's the difference between Yoga Alliance and Yoga Alliance Professionals UK?

A: Yoga Alliance is the largest global registry, based in the US. Yoga Alliance Professionals UK is a separate, UK-based accrediting body with its own directory and standards. Reputable UK schools are typically registered with one or both, and you can verify membership directly on the accrediting body's website.

Q: How do I verify a yoga school's accreditation is genuine?

A: Search the accrediting body's own public directory (for example, Yoga Alliance Professionals' directory) rather than relying solely on a badge or claim on the school's own site.

Q: Does a smaller class size actually matter for a 200-hour training?

A: Yes, particularly for practice teaching. Smaller cohorts mean more individual feedback on your cueing, alignment, and teaching voice — the parts of training that are hardest to self-correct without a teacher watching.
