The Vijnanabhairava Tantra is a discourse between the first Yogi Shiva and his consort Parvati. The words 'Vijnana-bhairava Tantra' means the technique of going beyond consciousness. 'Vijnan' (also spelt Vigyam) means consciousness, 'Bhairav' means the state which is beyond consciousness, and 'Tantra' means method or technique.
