What You Will Learn

Science made Simplistic

Breathing & Props

It’s generally understood that in Yin Yoga, you adopt a pose and work toward stillness. But in real-life teaching, that’s often easier said than done. This section explores how to teach correct breathing and use props intelligently to help guide students into stillness.

Restorative

Do you know the difference between Yin Yoga and Restorative? What’s actually happening in the body during each practice? Can the two styles merge in a modern Yin class? And how do we differentiate Yin from “Yang” yoga? This lesson explores it all—clearly and practically.

Biomechanics

Is there really a one-size-fits-all way to do a pose? Human variation tells us otherwise. By understanding how each body is uniquely structured, we’re better equipped to support students safely—instead of forcing them into a standard mould.

Science

An in-depth—yet accessible—look at the science behind Yin Yoga. Does the research support claims of connective tissue targeting? What does the evidence actually say, and how can we use this to better support our students and improve our teaching?

Back Pain

It’s said that 80% of people who take up yoga do so because of lower back pain. In this course, we explore how to modify common poses—not to avoid discomfort altogether, but to guide students safely out of pain and toward long-term healing.

Video Learning

There’s so much more to explore. This course is packed with videos and visuals to help you fully grasp this science-led approach to back pain. And yes, you’ll have access to all the material—for life.

Who is this Course for?

This course is for anyone who wants to understand Yin Yoga on a deeper level—beyond the clichés and vague cues we’ve all heard in class.

You don’t need to be a scientist. Just curious. And ready to teach with more clarity, stillness, and care.

Maybe you’re a yoga teacher who’s tired of saying “just relax into it” without really knowing what’s happening beneath the surface...
Maybe you’ve sensed that your students are checking out—not dropping in—but you’re not sure how to guide them differently...

Or maybe you’ve experienced the power of Yin Yoga yourself, and now want to share it with others in a way that’s informed, inclusive, and intentional.

You might be:
– A yoga teacher looking to better understand fascia, nervous system states, and tissue adaptation
– A PT, therapist, or coach exploring the role of stillness and passive range in healing
– A teacher rebuilding confidence and connection after burnout
– Or simply someone who wants to stop repeating generic Yin scripts and start teaching from real understanding

Wherever you are in your teaching or personal practice, this Hybrid in-house and Online Course meets you with science, tradition, and practicality—not dogma.

About Me

👤 Meet your teacher - Zahir Akram

Hi, I’m Zahir - owner of Akram Yoga Studio and a real teacher at heart. I love sharing science in a way that is really simplistic and accessible to all.

Over the years, I’ve taught in gyms, retreats, and packed studios. But what I really teach — is how to think. How to ask better questions. How to become a teacher that’s both curious and authentic.

In 2024, I was honoured to be named Favourite Yoga Teacher by Om Yoga Magazine. Our studio — Akram Yoga — was also voted Yoga Studio of the Year.

If you’re looking for someone who’ll teach you with humour, honesty, and real depth — not dogma — I think we’ll get on.

I absolutely LOVE what I do. That will be evident more and more as you make your way around the website, my BLOG page, our Youtube Channel and even my BOOK, 'Yoga, Madness or Medittaion?' - available on Amazon.

You really couldn't be in safer hands 🙏🏽

"These courses are truly a lifetime’s work, and I'm so grateful to have a platform to share everything I've learned over the years with you. My goal is for you to walk away feeling more confident in your understanding—not only so you can teach with assurance but also to empower you to be yourself and to question conventional yoga wisdom. Too often, this wisdom, even with the best intentions, causes more harm than good. I hope you can use what I teach to continue sharing the magic, helping others evolve and heal, just as yoga has done for me—and for you."

A word from course leader Zahir Akram -

"When I first began practicing Yin Yoga, it was out of necessity—for my worn-down lower back, which needed the space and time of longer holds. My muscles needed time to soften instead of fighting back, and I found that without a strong foundation in breathing, my body continued to resist. It was only by prioritizing breath over movement that I experienced a profound change in my body and my understanding of yoga itself."

"This is why I believe Yin Yoga is such a humbling practice—it takes us back to the roots. While defining "traditional yoga" is nearly impossible, we do know that for centuries, yoga was primarily practiced in seated or lying positions. Yin brings us back to this essence, forcing us to confront what we often fear the most—ourselves and our thoughts. While many forms of exercise can act as temporary escapes, leaving our worries at the door, Yin does the opposite. It requires us to meet our inner world head-on. In each five-minute hold, we are alone with our minds, working with our breath to truly "yoke" or unite it with our postures. We return to what yoga was intended to be—a practice of connecting within."

YIN YOGA / AKRAM YOGA ADDLESTONE
Zahir & Laura Akram / Akram Yoga - Yoga Teacher Training / 200H

I’ve dedicated half my life to understanding what makes us who and what we are. My studies have taken me from anatomy to philosophy—from the Greeks, who first dissected the human body, to the yogis who say we are not the body. This journey has led me from my parents' birthplace in Kashmir, to the bustling streets of Calcutta, and the serene landscapes of Nepal. I’ve broken down and dissected everything, from the mechanics of breathing to the intricacies of Bandhas.

I’ve had a complex relationship with yoga. I’ve loved it, critiqued it, fallen out of love with it, had enough of it—and yet, I keep coming back. My understanding of yoga isn’t just a collection of other people’s words or theories. It’s a tapestry woven from my own experiences, filled with moments of doubt, rediscovery, and personal growth.

Yoga has given me the strength to forge my own path, and that’s exactly what I hope to share with you. As the Sufis say, “In a conflict between the heart and the brain, follow your heart.” This course isn’t about rigid rules or seeking absolute truths. It’s about finding what feels true and right for you, with a heart-centered approach to learning.
