Low back pain can range from a dull, constant ache to a sudden, sharp sensation that leaves you in severe discomfort. This type of pain may start suddenly due to an accident or from lifting something heavy, or it may develop gradually over time due to age-related changes in the spine, or from poor repetitive movement patterns, such as improper squatting.
For many individuals, low back pain persists for more than three months, qualifying as chronic pain. Approximately 20% of these cases may persist for over a year. However, there is hope. Recent studies, including a 2017 National Institutes of Health report, indicate that individuals with mild to moderate chronic low back pain can experience significant relief through a carefully adapted set of yoga postures. These postures can not only reduce pain but also enhance mobility and walking.
The pivotal term in these findings is "ADAPTED." Generic yoga classes aimed at the general public may not cater to those with specific back issues and can potentially exacerbate the pain, as observed frequently in Zahir's experience. The essence of practising yoga with a "bad back" lies in understanding how and when to modify a pose to accommodate your unique physical needs. This sometimes means diverging from the instructor's guidance to maintain spinal integrity and prevent further injury.
